One of the most common concerns about homeschooling is socialization. In the GTA, it’s also one of the least valid concerns. The region has an unusually active homeschooling community with dozens of co-ops, groups, and enrichment programs specifically for home-educated children.
What Is a Homeschool Co-op?
A co-op (cooperative) is a group of homeschooling families who share teaching responsibilities and resources. A typical co-op might have parents taking turns teaching science, art, drama, or physical education to a combined group of children one or two days per week. Co-ops vary enormously — some are formal with scheduled classes, others are informal meetups and social groups.

Established Programs
Royal Ontario Museum (ROM): Offers homeschool-specific programming and reduced-rate field trips for homeschool groups on weekdays.
Ontario Science Centre: Weekday homeschool programs with hands-on science curriculum designed for home-educated learners.
Toronto Public Library: Many branches run homeschool-friendly daytime programming — check tpl.ca for schedules.
Ripley’s Aquarium: Homeschool group rates and curriculum-aligned programming.
Black Creek Pioneer Village: Curriculum-connected historical programs, with homeschool groups welcomed on weekdays.
Sports and Physical Activity
Most GTA recreation centres offer daytime programs that work well for homeschooled children: swimming lessons, gymnastics, and skating at times when traditionally-schooled children are unavailable.
Homeschool sports leagues exist for soccer, basketball, and volleyball in the GTA — check Facebook groups and the OHEA for current offerings.
Starting Your Own Group
If you don’t find a group that fits, start one. Most successful GTA homeschool groups began with one parent posting in a Facebook group: “Looking for other homeschooling families in [neighbourhood] for weekly meetups.” You’ll hear from people quickly — the community is active and welcoming of newcomers.
Faith-Based Homeschool Networks
Many GTA homeschooling families connect through faith communities. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim homeschooling networks exist throughout the region, offering curriculum resources, co-ops, and social events within specific faith contexts. Search your faith community’s networks for homeschooling connections.
