With one of the largest South Asian populations outside India, the GTA celebrates Diwali on a scale that surprises even visitors from India. The Festival of Lights typically falls in October or November and brings weeks of events across the region.
Mississauga: Festival of Lights at Celebration Square
Mississauga’s main Diwali event at Celebration Square in the City Centre is one of the largest Diwali celebrations in North America. The event typically draws tens of thousands of visitors over multiple days and features:
- Live Bollywood and classical Indian music performances
- Traditional dance performances: Bhangra, Bharatanatyam, Garba
- Food vendors with sweets, chaat, and traditional snacks
- Rangoli displays and interactive cultural demonstrations
- A fireworks or light show finale
It’s free to attend and extremely crowded — arrive early and use MiWay transit. Parking is nearly impossible near the square on event days.
Brampton: Garden Square and Community Events
Brampton, with one of the highest proportions of South Asian residents of any major Canadian city, celebrates Diwali intensely throughout the community. Garden Square hosts the main civic celebration, while dozens of temple and community organization events run throughout October and November.
The Brampton Flower City Garba, often held in October during Navratri (which precedes Diwali), is one of the largest Garba events in North America — thousands of participants in traditional dress dancing for multiple nights.
Toronto: Gerrard India Bazaar and Distillery District
Gerrard India Bazaar hosts the Diwali on Gerrard street festival, closing the street to traffic for a full day of vendors, performances, and food.
The Distillery District often runs a Diwali-inspired winter lights event, with illuminated installations and cultural programming in the historic cobblestone district.
Temple Celebrations
Hindu temples across the GTA hold their own Diwali pujas and community events:
- BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir (Etobicoke): Known for elaborate decorations and community events
- Hindu Sabha Mandir (Brampton): One of the largest Hindu temples in Canada
- Vishnu Mandir (Richmond Hill): Major North York area temple with community programming
Check each temple’s website or social media for specific event schedules, as these vary year to year.
Diwali Shopping and Sweets
Mithai (Indian sweets) are the currency of Diwali gift-giving. Every South Asian sweet shop in the GTA runs special Diwali boxes in October and November. Pre-order if you want specific items — popular shops sell out days before Diwali.
