The GTA transforms in winter, and the holiday season brings some of the region’s most atmospheric events. From the legendary Distillery District Christmas Market to municipal light festivals, here’s where to find the best of the season.
Toronto Distillery District Christmas Market
Consistently rated one of the top Christmas markets in North America, the Distillery District market runs from mid-November through Christmas Eve in the historic cobblestone pedestrian village. Features include:
- 100+ artisan and food vendors in the outdoor market
- Live music, choral performances, and entertainment
- An outdoor skating rink (skate rentals available)
- The LCBO gift shop with holiday collections
- A giant Christmas tree as the centrepiece
Important: Timed entry tickets are required on weekends — purchase in advance at distillerychristmasmarket.com. Weekday visits are typically free and far less crowded.
Cavalcade of Lights (Nathan Phillips Square)
Toronto’s annual Cavalcade of Lights in late November marks the lighting of the city’s official Christmas tree at Nathan Phillips Square. Free outdoor event with live performances, the outdoor skating rink opening, and a fireworks finale. One of the best free events of the holiday season.
Winter Stations and Light Festivals
Winterlicious: Toronto’s famous prix-fixe dining event (January/February) extends holiday season dining with fixed-price menus at hundreds of participating restaurants.
Brookfield Place Winter Garden: The stunning atrium in the financial district is decorated for the season and hosts free programming throughout December.
High Park Winter Events: Skating on Grenadier Pond (weather permitting) is a Toronto tradition — entirely free and one of the most beautiful outdoor winter experiences in the city.
905 Area Winter Events
Mississauga: Celebration Square hosts an outdoor skating rink from November through February (rental available) and holiday programming through December. The rink is free to skate on weekdays.
Brampton: Gage Park’s outdoor skating rink and the Garden Square holiday programming are Brampton’s main winter draws.
Richmond Hill: The Richmond Hill Christmas Tree Lighting and winter village event in the town centre.
Markham: The Village of Unionville is particularly picturesque in December, with local businesses decorating the heritage streetscape.
The Osgoode Hall Christmas Trail
A lesser-known gem: Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto opens its historic grounds for a walking Christmas trail in December, with lights and decorations in a setting most Torontonians never see. Free and worth the 30 minutes.
