ABA Therapy in the GTA: What It Is, Where to Find It, and What to Expect

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is the most extensively researched treatment for autism spectrum disorder. For GTA families navigating an autism diagnosis, understanding ABA — what it is, what it isn’t, how to access it, and what the funding situation looks like — is essential.

What ABA Actually Is

ABA is a scientific approach to understanding behaviour — how it’s learned, what maintains it, and how it can be changed. For children with autism, evidence-based ABA focuses on:

  • Building communication skills (verbal and alternative communication)
  • Developing daily living skills (self-care, independence)
  • Reducing behaviours that interfere with learning or safety
  • Improving social skills and play
  • Supporting academic readiness

Modern ABA is naturalistic, play-based, and child-centred — very different from the historic image of rigid, desk-based drill. Well-implemented ABA should feel, to the child, more like supported play than therapy.

Ontario’s OAP Program

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP), administered by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, funds ABA services for Ontario children diagnosed with ASD:

  • Needs-based services: Access to OAP-funded services through regional service providers
  • Core clinical services: Includes ABA-based assessments and treatment
  • Childhood Budgets: Annual funding that families can direct toward OAP-eligible services (including ABA from registered providers)

Register with your regional OAP provider as soon as possible after diagnosis. Wait times have historically been significant — early registration matters.

Check current OAP program details at ontario.ca/page/ontario-autism-program — program details change and the current iteration differs from previous versions.

Finding Private ABA Providers in the GTA

Many families supplement or access ABA privately when wait times for OAP services are long. Key resources:

  • Ontario Association for Behaviour Analysis (ONTABA): ontaba.com — directory of certified behaviour analysts in Ontario
  • Kerry’s Place Autism Services: kerrysplace.org — one of the largest ABA providers in Ontario
  • Behaviour Institute: behaviourinstitute.com — GTA-based ABA services
  • Geneva Centre for Autism: autism.net — Toronto-based; programs and consultations

What to Look For in a Provider

  • Supervision by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) — the credential that indicates professional training in ABA
  • Transparent treatment goals that you agree to and can monitor
  • Regular parent training and involvement — you implementing strategies consistently at home significantly amplifies therapy outcomes
  • Progress monitoring with data — ABA should be data-driven and responsive to what the data shows
