Eid Celebrations in the GTA: Mosques, Restaurants, and Community Events

The Greater Toronto Area is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in Canada, making Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha significant community celebrations across the region. For residents and newcomers alike, here’s where to find prayers, food, and festivities.

Eid Prayers: Where to Go

With over 100 mosques and prayer facilities across the GTA, finding Eid prayers is not the challenge — the challenge is finding parking. Many mosques hold multiple congregations starting before dawn. Some of the largest prayer gatherings in the GTA:

  • Islamic Foundation of Toronto (Scarborough): One of the largest Islamic centres in Canada; holds multiple Eid prayer sessions
  • ISNA Canada (Mississauga): Large community centre with multiple prayer times
  • Salaheddin Islamic Centre (Scarborough): Major community mosque with large Eid gatherings
  • Abu Huraira Centre (Toronto): Multiple locations across the GTA with large congregations
  • Brampton Mosque / Masjid Ibrahim: Serves Brampton’s large Muslim community

For current prayer times, check your local mosque directly — schedules are announced based on moon sighting and may vary year to year.

Eid Dining in the GTA

The GTA’s South Asian, Middle Eastern, and African communities make the food landscape exceptional around Eid:

Mississauga (Dixie/Burnhamthorpe corridor): Dozens of Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi restaurants; biryani, haleem, and sweets are especially popular on Eid morning.

Brampton (Bramalea area): Strong South Asian restaurant scene with catering especially active on Eid.

Scarborough: Middle Eastern, Somali, and South Asian restaurants; Little India on Gerrard Street has sweet shops open early on Eid.

North York / Thorncliffe Park: Culturally diverse neighbourhood with halal bakeries, sweet shops, and restaurants catering specifically to Eid celebrations.

Eid Community Events

Many GTA mosques and community organizations run Eid fairs and family events — rides, crafts, food vendors, and entertainment for children. Check:

  • Your local mosque’s social media in the weeks before Eid
  • Muslim community Facebook groups by city
  • Eventbrite.ca filtered by “Eid” and your location

Eid Shopping

New clothes are a tradition for many families on Eid. The GTA has excellent options:

  • Erin Mills Town Centre and surrounding Mississauga area: Multiple South Asian clothing boutiques
  • Gerrard India Bazaar (Toronto): Saris, sherwanis, salwar kameez
  • Bramalea City Centre area: Growing selection of South Asian and Middle Eastern fashion
